Fitting Axle Seals - Dos and Don'ts

Fitting Dos and Don'ts for Axle Seals

axle_seal.jpg

(Especially seals with axle rings)

Dos

Check for burrs in bore of hub and axle and clean off before fitting

  • Always use new seal with sleeve supplied
  • Pre-lubricate sealing edges prior to fitting (i.e. smear of grease between the lips)
  • Apply non setting sealant to outside diameter (OD) of seal and bore of sleeve prior to fitting
  • Always use correct fitting tools for both seal and sleeve
  • Radius on end of OD of sleeve to be outward facing

Also...

  • Always be careful when working on a raised vehicle. Avoid excessive rocking.
  • Be careful not to damage the new seal. You may want to go ahead and buy a couple of seals. If you damage one you will have a spare. It is better to be prepared than to have to run back to the parts store in the middle of a repair.

Don'ts

  • NEVER use a seal on a previously run sleeve
  • Don't use hammer or other similar tool directly on seal or sleeve when fitting

Received a lovely note from Maldon Museum & Archives Association thanking us for a small donation. The Association is run by volunteers and even small contributions help keep it operating.

Visit their website http://sites.google.com/site/maldonauhistory/Home or better still if you are in Maldon one weekend, pay them a visit.

Make the most of this year's harvest

Make the most of this year’s harvest

 Harvest.jpg

Thanks to the good recent rains it looks like we might have a good harvest this year.

Many farmers are already making sure their balers and harvesters are good to go.

Avoid getting stuck with a breakdown right in the middle of cropping.

Not having the right parts could cost you serious time and money, right when you don’t need it!

It’s a good idea to check your equipment, and at Centre State Bearings we have a good range of chain & sprockets, belts & pulleys, bearings, filters and more.

Give us a call on (03) 5446 8722 and make the most of this year’s harvest.

What Bearing Do I need?

Tapered_Roller_Bearings.jpgWhat bearing do I need?

You have just had a breakdown, and you need a bearing right away, but what bearing do you need? Some times it's too easy. There is a clearly visible part number, so away you go!

But even then you can have difficulty, like a bearing with a standard part number on it, that turns out not to be standard. These are sometimes called "inch bore metric bearings" or "funny bore Bearings"

Try to get an accurate measurement.

Most bearings go by ID x OD x W. That is: Inside Diameter (or shaft) x Outside Diameter (or Housing) x Width (or Depth). Metric or imperial measurements don't really matter as we can convert to the style that is appropriate.

Also be on the look out for any special features.
Does the bearing have a snap ring and groove? Is the Inner Race wider than the outer race? Is the outer race rounded or spherical in shape? Perhaps the bearing is flanged?

Where does the bearing go, and what does it do?

To get the right bearing, sometimes knowing the application can help. If it is for an Automotive or Off Road vehicle, let us know the make, model and year, engine type and size etc. We have listings for hundreds of applications.

If in doubt call us at Centre State Bearings.

Chances are that we can help you identify that bearing (or seal, or filter, or other part...)
